Baseball Analytics: Using Data to Drive On-Field Performance - with Gabe Schumm, Ph.D.
In this presentation, Gabe will break down how Major League Baseball teams organize and deploy their analytics departments to guide decision-making and drive player development. He will explore how baseball analytics departments are typically divided, and how these divisions interact with their respective stakeholders. He will also touch on the current analytics landscape in the MLB and how I think analytics departments will evolve as more teams embrace the use of data.
About the Presenter:
After completing an undergraduate degree in Physics at UC Berkeley, Gabe went on to earn a Ph.D. in computational Physics from Boston University. His career path then took an unconventional turn, as he now enters his second year as a Player Development Analyst for the New York Mets.
In this role, he applies his technical and analytical background to explore research topics in baseball strategy and help optimize on-field performance. This involves working closely with other analysts, as well as translating our findings for executives, coaches, and in some cases, directly to players.
